There’s a lot you probably don’t know about Burke. Did you know it has some interesting Civil War connections? Did you know it was the original site selection for what is now Dulles Airport? Did you ever wonder who this “Burke” person was? Did you know the Burke Nursery used to be a racetrack?

Be sure to stop by the BHS booth at the Burke Centre Festival!

The Burke Historical Society meets the last Sunday of the month. Some meetings are open to the public. Visit their website www.burkehistoricalsociety.org to view their calendar of events and learn a bit of the history surrounding Burke, Virginia. Consider becoming a member.

This year, Burke History Day will be taking place on October 12, 2013 in downtown Burke. Did you even know there was a downtown Burke?

#4 Visit The Burke Farmers Market

Saturdays

May 3 – November 22

8:00 am – Noon

Located at the Burke VRE Station.

Nothing says summer like the taste of a fresh tomato or juicy peach or the bright blossoms of sunflowers. If you Live In Burke™,  the Burke Farmers Market comes to life with a feast for the senses. The vibrant colors of freshly picked fruits and vegetables contrast with the fragrant perfume of cut flowers. The aroma of freshly baked bread and pastries floats across the market while patrons savor samples of creamy artisan cheese. You can find fresh eggs, meats and other edible delights along with gardening plants of all sizes.

All products sold are produced by vendors within 125 miles of Fairfax County. Brokers or resellers are strictly prohibited, so you can be assured that the produce you purchase at the Burke farmers market is fresh, locally-grown and consistently good.

The Farmers Markets are supervised by the Fairfax County Park Authority through the Community Horticulture office based at Green Spring Gardens. The daily operations of the markets are managed by volunteer Market Masters.

Fairfax County Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners offer a Plant Clinic on site to answer questions about plants in your Burke landscape. Bring plant or insect samples for pest identification or disease diagnosis or check out their informational displays on topics such as Container Gardening or EcoSavvy Gardening.
